Also, there is a lot of ink spilt bemoaning the loss of good and wholesome ways as our old social mores have dissolved. But what about the hoary warty uncles who went hand in hand with those old ways that were also shown the door?
Perhaps we have more drama and more social clash because we have more time for such trivialities now that the specters of starvation and death at 40 have been shown to the door. Perhaps we have the time and inclination to sift speeches for implied racism because we’ve defeated the old white robed monsters that could put up “No Darkies Allowed” signs in their local stores. Maybe we can indulge in crackpot vaccines cause autism theories because we don’t have a relative whose child went blind from smallpox or who drowned in their own diphtheria induced mucus. Maybe families and tribes are looser now because society has become so civilized that a person has a hope of surviving, nay even prospering without the protective (controlling, smothering, oppressing) shield of their tribe or clan.

Now I’ll admit some things have been lost. Time was on whacking day I could grab a bat, go out and beat the Irish. Sure they took many a lump but it was all in good fun. Then the civil rights activists came so I had to hit snakes instead. Then PETA drove into town and now all I can do is whack goblins with an electronic stick on the Wii.

I mean sure, modern times are far from perfect. But whenever their deficiencies are raised I typically search in vain for the balance; for the other side of the ledger where the sufficiencies are listed. Modern civilization, living and liberalism just can’t catch a break.Report
