What is with certain corners of the conservative commentariat? (I’m sure no problems of a similar nature occur in liberal circles. Merciful heavens, no!) Why do they lack all sense of proportion or intellectual nuance? Why is it that, when I read (perfectly reasonable) responses like yours, I feel like the tone one needs to take with such people is the slow, measured pace one would use in speaking to an unruly, sulky child?Report

Case in point, Lou Dobb’s poll for today:
“Are you concerned that President Obama seems compelled to continue to apologize for the United States wherever he travels?”Report

  3. Will says:

Yeah, it seems Dobbs and co. aren’t particularly interested in how diplomacy actually worksReport

Besides which, he didn’t say or suggest any of the things “Legal Insurrection” is claiming he did – they’re just purposefully misinterpreting him.Report

Ultimately what a President says to other nations and people is irrelevant as long as it secures the USA’s interest. How best to do this maybe debatable, but if glad handing and smiling to petty dictators, or giving out empty apologies results in expanded prosperity and security for our nation, then do what ever it takes to get results. In the end nothing a President says in a speech is binding the US to anything.Report

Many people on the Right are deeply invested in the idea that the United States of America is perfect – well perfect except that people are allowed to disagree with them, anyway. The idea is that any acknowledgment that we are not is a treasonous failure to love America. The whole reason why Colbert is so funny is that his character actually comes out and SAYS he believes this.

And it’s only sort of related, but it bothers me that I can’t tell if Dan’s comment is sarcastic or not.Report
