Okay, I admit. I haven’t even read this yet. I will, shortly. But I wanted to just say this:

FINALLY! Sheesh. About bloody time… 😉Report

The title of this post says all that needs saying.

Setting up a false choice between society/community/family/front poarch and some imagined individualism is beyond comprehension.

The last individual was Adam, I kid.

The first community was Adam and Eve, I kid.Report

Bob – the point is not that the two can’t function together, but only that when too much of an imbalance is created bad things happen. But more later, more later. The point is not one vs. the other, but rather how they are emphasized, and the values placed (and in what proportion) on each.Report

Some day I’m going to have to get around to teaching you kids about Charles Fort, truly the last individual, unless Mike at Crime and Federalism counts.Report

E.D. exactly. And “how they are emphasized” is an individual choice.Report

Mark writes, “…I and communitarians like E.D. and the Front Porch Republic are ultimately after something very similar: a less intrusive centralized government, and a less materialistic, more virtuous culture.”

Well who isn’t? I want to mention flag, motherhood, apple pie.

But as always, yes always, no specifics.

What does a less “centralized government” do or refrain from doing? No income tax, flat tax, no tariffs, what? No postal service? No Dept. of Education? No regulation of asbestos or lead in paint on your child’s toys? No environmental or wildlife protections? No Medicare? No food stamps? No Social Security? No federal aid to states suffering from natural disasters?

I’m not seeking an exhaustive list, but jezz, a clue would be nice. I’m sure you have given this, “less intrusive…government,” a lot of thought.

And — “more virtuous culture” — I’m flummoxed. Let’s see, no porn? No abortion? No premarital sex? No gambling? Bring back the Hayes Code? No violent video games? Return to probation?

I’m not seeking an exhaustive list, but jezz, a clue would be nice. I’m sure you have given this, “more virtuous culture,” a lot of thought.

Just to make this clear, I want to cut waste from the Federal Budget.Report
