Interesting! It strikes me that the phenomenon you’re describing has a lot of similarities to the collapsitarians that Kevin Kelly (of Wired) writes about. I don’t know how feasible these coalitions would be, however, because of the question of entitlements. As it stands the traditionalist right has never been keen on the safety net, for a variety of reasons (they don’t like that it reduces reliance on family and local charity/community, a more punishment-based worldview, the recipients are often not exactly their constituency, and etc); meanwhile, any proposed liberaltarian alliance would similarly have a more restrictive view of these programs (for instance, means-testing Social Security might be a sine qua non for a liberaltarian alliance). It would require some pretty serious shifts in ideology, that’s for sure.Report

Well, for this to happen, the Right would have to cut back on the demonizing of those “least libertarian” factions on the Left, which–perhaps deliberately in attempt to keep this can of worms closed–you left unspecified. But it’s clear you are referring to traditionalist racial-ethnic minorities. Which is why I suspect Ross may be right on a longer scale than you would agree with.Report
